Should Students Be Required to Learn a Foreign Language?

Should students have to learn a foreign language?

Many cash-strapped schools across the United States are cutting out foreign language classes. Some people say students should spend more time mastering reading and writing in English, instead of other languages. Others argue that knowing a language other than English is now more important than ever. They say that having foreign-language skills may give kids an advantage when they look for jobs in the future.  What do you think?

  1. I think it is not necessary to learn a foreign language unless they want to. It might get them a better job but it should not be forced.

  8. No students dont have to learn a specific language but they can if they wanted to. They would have to learn a different language if they moved to like China, Russia, and or Ireland.

  10. Learning your language might be hard, but learning some other language might be extremely challenging. When I first came to the U.S., I did'nt know how to speak english. But know I can speak fluently.

  11. I do think that people should save the foreign-language because it is cool if any one can speak that. Also one time people spoke that and it would be fun to learn another language. So yes I do think that they should keep the foreign-language classes.

  13. I think that they should keep the "Foreign Language" classes because some students that go to these other states wont have a type of language to communicate with other people in that state. If someone came from a different country and they didnt have the foreign language classes to help them out, then they will be confused of what people say to them. They might think that Gray is Green because in their country they know how to say it in a different way other than any other Language!

  14. I think they should keep the foreign language classes because it is a great advantage and it is cool to know how to speak a second language. English is not the most important language because you could be offered to do a international job which would probably require you to know the language of that country.

  18. I think that people should practice other languages than English... Other wise, people wouldn't be able to communicate with other family memebers... Wouldn't we think the same about the other countries trying to abandon our language?
